Changing Places Toilet Opens in Ringwood Lake Park, The 1st in Australia

On a windy, cold drizzly day the bad weather couldn’t dampen the excitement of the first Changing Places Toilet opening at Ringwood Park Lake. Changing Places toilets cater for a different user group compared to accessible toilets that are already required in commercial buildings. Standard accessible toilets are designed for independent use by an individual and do have sufficient space, or the necessary features required by many people with severe or profound disabilities.

Changing Places toilets are designed for people who cannot use these standard accessible toilets and include an adult sized adjustable changing table, a ceiling hoist and lots of circulation space for carers or assistants. The short video below provides an overview of why we need these facilities. Please read more at http://changingplaces.org.au/learn-more/

Apologies for my bad photos below, but they show the components of the facility, including the adjustable adult sized change table, hoist system throughout the room and lots of space. The entry door is also automated and operates off an MLAK locking system.

An excellent initiative by Maroondah City Council and the Association for Children with Disability (ACD), with support from the local Lions Club and one which I am proud to have been involved with for some time. Keep up the great work and if anyone reads this (hopefully..) please also support the ACD and play your part in spreading the message to anyone who’ll listen as we need these in public spaces throughout Australia. Thank you
